Alice Allison Dunnigan was born in Russellville, KY in 1906, and she became actively involved in the civil rights movement in the 1930's. She moved to Washington DC in 1942, and she became the first African American woman authorized to attend the White House, Congressional and Supreme Court press conferences. Fighting the twin strikes of racism and sexism, she was actively involved in the civil rights movement and the struggle for equality until her death in 1983. A 15 - minute film about Ms. Dunnigan will also be shown.
The SEEK (Struggles for Emancipation and Equality in Kentucky) Museum tells the unique and important history of slavery in Kentucky, along with the related history of the struggles for freedom, equality and justice. This is told in 6 historic buildings located in two adjoining National Register Districts in Russellville, Kentucky.
